“I’m not sure I’m using your services in the best way possible.” This is a common statement from new entrepreneurs as they begin the process and relationship of working with a business coach. This is a timely conversation, and article, as we head into the last quarter of the year.
This all just comes back to the fact that, for many of us, we just don’t know what we don’t know. Working with a business coach is something each and every entrepreneur, who is focused on success, should be doing. No one can do this alone. The life of an entrepreneur can be very lonely, intimidating and overwhelming. It can also be very expensive as many entrepreneurs attempt to re-invent the wheel, make costly mistakes and end up in a precarious financial situation.
All of this can be avoided. And that’s why I want to give you some things to consider when you hire a coach (and you should hire a coach!):
1. HIRE THE RIGHT COACH.
This is often the first mistake made by entrepreneurs. How do you know who is the ‘right’ coach for you? Make a list of your needs – and do your homework. DO NOT make this decision based on a scarcity mindset – you know the one I mean ……when you start thinking ‘I can’t afford that person”! THAT alone is a huge mistake. Get into the abundance mindset.
2. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
There are many ways to get the information you need for hiring the right coach – get references, check them out on line, ask about their successes AND failures. Take responsibility for gathering information.
3. COMMIT TO THAT COACH.
There’s nothing worse, in this industry, than talking to ‘coach hoppers’. These people do not know how to make a commitment – expect to sign contracts and then become ‘friends’ with the coach. This is not a ‘friendship’. This is a business transaction. So honor your commitment – AND be prepared to stick with that commitment for at least 3 years. That is how long it takes to gain momentum, to get traction, to get to know each other and for the coach to get the full picture of your capabilities and for YOU to make great and steady progress in growing your business.
4. ASK QUESTIONS.
If this is your first experience in working with a coach, ask lots of questions. No question is stupid – every question counts when you want to make progress. Ask. Ask. Ask. Ask what questions you should be asking (yes, that’s exactly what I meant to say). Ask how best to prepare for the coaching calls. Ask what you might be missing because you don’t know what you don’t know. ASK!
5. TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.
This is a professional relationship between you and the coach. Most coaching programs these days include a group mastermind program. Whether or not you are in a group situation, YOU are still responsible for the experience you are having. If you are confused, speak up. If you are not feeling satisfied with the outcomes, speak up. If you are frustrated with a certain process, speak up. If you hear of any negativity brewing in the group, speak up. BE responsible. Treat your coach the way you would like to be treated. ‘We teach people how to treat us’ – Dr. Phil.
6. SHOW UP – DO THE WORK – BE ENGAGED.
There is no ‘magic’ button here. There is no ‘easy’ button here. Being an entrepreneur is hard work – and that is why you hire a coach. Do not retreat when things get tough – when you feel frustrated – stay in the game. You are an adult. Your coach should not have to be running after you – ‘man up’! Do your part. Remember, it’s all about progress and not perfection.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS AND I CAN GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH A BUSINESS COACH!
Will everything be perfect? NO – business coaches are human beings. They are imperfect. They make mistakes. However, it is all about communication – no one can read your mind.
So, take a look in the mirror and assess where you can improve your performance and your relationship with your business coach. One step at a time. Be coachable – be THAT person who:
- Does the work.
- Asks the questions.
- Shows up.
- Is engaged.
- Participates fully in the program.
- Takes a ‘no excuses’ approach to your success.
- Gives referrals.
- Provides regular testimonials.
- Is fun to work with.
- Pays your bills!
- Grows your business.
- Belongs on the ‘A” List!
