“I just don’t know what to write about.” Entrepreneurs know, intellectually, that it’s vitally important to keep in front of your audience consistently. And one of the easiest ways to do this is by writing a newsletter each week and getting in front of your community.
While I love writing and have always kept a journal, I have come to realize that there are many entrepreneurs who freeze just at the thought of writing something at all, let alone each week. My philosophy is always to just keep things simple. Many of you tend to over-complicate things.
This article is to give you a few ideas on how to get into the habit of writing each week and showing up in front of your community on a regular basis. I always like to break things down – it’s like eating an elephant when you think about writing newsletters each week for 52 weeks. It’s much easier when you focus on small bites.
Here are a few ways I handle my e-zine calendar:
1. BREAK IT DOWN INTO SEASONAL TOPICS.
For those of us who live in North America, this is easy. There are 4 distinct seasons – and those 4 seasons can bring about a variety of topics – anything from food, to clothing, to shopping, to travel. When you consider the type of business you are in – take mine, for example, the Speaking and Coaching business – then you can see that it would be easy for me to write about planning for the new year when we are in the last quarter of the year (fall). In winter, it’s easy for me to write about travel and some of the tips that help me to stay calm, cool and collected when on the road – despite the hazards that commonly occur at that time of year. Think about your own experiences as it relates to each of the 4 seasons. What tips can you provide to your audience?
2. MAP OUT A MONTHLY THEME.
I have taken that approach as well. January would have me write articles about cash flow, handling the Christmas bills/invoices/credit card statements coming in. February would be an easy month to write about love – loving your clients, loving your family, loving your work, etc. October is my most favorite as I write about Gratitude and how it plays out in every part of our lives as well. In June, I often write about creating a plan to keep business going and active throughout the 3 major months of summer. Get the gist? You can do this, too.
3. BE CREATIVE AND GO WITH THE FLOW.
Then there are times when I just write about what’s happening in my life and in my business in the moment. That’s it. No deeper planning than that. I have been writing, lately, about my 4th annual 3-day Wealth Makers event in Toronto, Oct. 19-21. There are lots of moving parts – planning starts at least 10 months in advance and there are so many different business topics that I can address and write about – event planning, budgeting, resources, marketing, the food, the program, the players, etc. You’ve got a great business happening, too – what would be of interest to your community?
The key to success here is a few things:
- SCHEDULE YOUR WRITING EACH WEEK.
- PICK A STRATEGY BASED ON THE IDEAS ABOVE.
- COMMIT TO DOING IT!
- PUT YOUR TIMER ON AND STAY FOCUSED.
- HAVE FUN.
Will you?
What will you write about in your next newsletter?
Please share your thoughts.
I will write about Nuite Blanche in Toronto and how it is a great opportunity to get out and walk around and open your mind to new and interesting things.
