I was dragging my suitcase down the long hallway at the hotel in Phoenix recently. I remember thinking to myself – ‘why didn’t I ask for a room closer to the elevator???”
And then, as I was at the airport heading to my flight, I missed the sign for the ‘PreTSA” check in and found myself back tracking and having to go quite a distance further. Again, I was asking myself – ‘why didn’t I pay closer attention so I didn’t have to go that much further?”
And then it dawned on me! That was pretty stupid and toxic thinking. Here I was, with every opportunity on this trip to get in as many steps as I could without any planning or effort, really – I was wearing my Fit-Bit and have been recording my steps and workouts faithfully.
I NEEDED AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT!
What felt like a hardship, in those immediate moments, was actually a blessing in disguise. At the start of the year, I had set a goal for this to be my ‘best body year’ ever. And here I was complaining about the distance, both at the hotel and at the airport. Geez!
Working in the field of Mindset over the past 25 years, I knew better. I know that there a few things going on here – let me share because this applies to all of us, both personally and professionally when it comes to running a business (and attracting ideal clients and making money!)
1) SET A GOAL
As entrepreneurs, it is essential that we set goals for our business. Those who do not have goals and a plan are likely to fail. I always set goals – both personally and professionally. For this year, one of those goals is to have the best body ever. I have those goals spelled out into an action plan – and I have the tools and resources in place to support my goals – thus, the Fit Bit!
2) REVIEW THOSE GOALS REGULARLY
I do this on a daily basis. What happened with both the hotel and airport incidents were that I was in a hurry, was focused on my level of fatigue and lost sight of the blessing in front of my face. I was in a position to get more steps in that day even though, because of my full schedule, I was not able to get to the Fitness Center. Duh!
3) RECOGNIZE OPPORTUNITIES
This is where/when many of us lose sight of our goals and focus on the negative instead. And that way of thinking will take you down, my friends. I had opportunities right under my nose and was not paying attention. Fatigue. Distractions. Lack of Time. Lack of focus. These all get in the way of our goals, both personally and professionally.
SO WHAT? WHO CARES? WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES THIS MAKE?
Here’s the ‘so what’? WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE, YOU CHANGE YOUR PERFORMANCE!
That was the message, loud and clear. Once I shifted my thinking – focused on my goals again – saw the opportunities that existed in just these 2 situations – and then recorded my results from the Fit Bit at the end of the day, I realized the blessings in disguise just on that one day! I exceeded my 10,000 steps both times!
The message? Pay attention in your personal life and recognize how it transfers to business.
1) Set specific goals to take you to your revenue target for the year.
2) Review those goals on a daily basis.
3) Stop, breathe and recognize there are opportunities right under your nose!
4) Document your results.
5) Celebrate.
6) Rinse and Repeat.
An attitude adjustment is easy when your focus on the goal. You either change your goal or change your attitude. You have the power! I chose to change my attitude! The results have been amazing.
My question to you is – what is your attitude when it comes to your business goals this week?
Then put my tips into action and let us know what worked for you, ok?
