Have you ever had the experience where a friend made a promise to you – and then they went back on their word? I have had that experience and it sucks, quite honestly. What’s up with that type of behavior? For some people, this is habitual.

Where and when have you ever made a promise and then backed out?  Often, this is a reflection of our up-bringing and conditioning. Whether or not we keep our word, to others or to ourselves, becomes a habit. For many people, going back on your word has become a very bad habit.

“The way you do anything is the way you do everything’ is an expression I hear from my coach.  When you are in business and it’s time to up-level, this is a great time to examine some of our habits – good and bad.

In his book, ‘The Four Agreements’, Don Miguel Ruiz identifies the first agreement as “Be Impeccable With Your Word!”  He goes on to say:

“The First Agreement is the most important one and also the most difficult to honor. It is so important that with just this first agreement you will be able to transcend to the level of existence I call heaven on earth. Why your word? Your word is the power that you have to create. ……The word is the most powerful tool that you have to create.

Be impeccable with your word if you want to be free, if you want to be happy, if you want to transcend the level of existence that is hell. It is very powerful. “

When it comes to the way you do business and/or live your life, I invite you to examine the power of your word. Where and when do you make commitments and then back out?

  • Have you joined a club or a group, made your commitment – and then backed out?
  • Have you made a promise to a family member or friend – and then backed out?
  • Have you made a promise to yourself – and then backed out?

What have been the consequences of that action?

When you say you are going to do something, make the commitment and then back out – you are diminishing the power of your word – to yourself and to others around you. You are going to lose credibility. People will not believe in you. People will not support you. People will not want to work with you. People will not want to be with you.

You can turn this around!   Look at where you have made commitments this past month:

  • identify those commitments where you backed out
  • examine the reasons why (typically, it’s fear!!!! And if so, then click here to read last week’s ezine:__________) – or it’s simply become a bad habit
  • what are the consequences of those decisions/choices
  • which ones will you stand by (and thus, increase the power of your word to yourself!).

CONCLUSION

“The way you do anything IS the way you do everything”.   If you want to be taken seriously as a wealthy woman leader, then you need to get serious about the commitments you make. Make a decision – and stick by it – no matter what! Get real! Get honest. Grow up!

Is your word to be trusted? Only YOU know that for certain.

“Inner commitment to your own excellence is the stuff of which miracles are made.”

– Wayne Dyer
