How many of you have just jumped into the world of business without any real business training or skills?  How’s that working for you? For many, it starts with a dream – a vision – a passion – and even a sense of purpose. But……business skills and training? Not likely.

Recently, I had a total make-over experience at Nordstrom’s as part of a Celebrity Brand program I am in. I totally surrendered to the experts and was open to change. Well, change did happen.

As part of the experience, I got a new hairdo. Actually, I had been growing my hair for a few months in preparation for this experience – it is typically only an inch long. And then, the inevitable. I returned home. Trying to re-enact the whole hair experience became an exercise in frustration. First of all, I’m not used to having hair of any length – so let’s start with that.

That meant I needed to purchase some hair products. And those hair products are not inexpensive, let me tell you! And that’s where it all began. I want to share the experience with you because it absolutely relates to the way many of us run our business.

Here we are now – business owners.  Well, now what? I can tell you what I know for sure about many women entrepreneurs. You have no money! And you won’t get a business loan because that’s D.E.B.T. – and you don’t like debt (past conditioning!).

So where do you start? You start by attending/listening to all the free tele-classes, teleseminars, tele-summits and anything else out there, that is business related, that is F.R.E.E.

Ok – well, there’s nothing wrong with that. But there comes a point where you need to invest in your business! And some of you do that – but, you’re doing it without a plan and without a guide or a coach.

One thing I know for sure – you’re not going to make money and you’re not going to get rich running your business that way. Accessing all the free information that is available over the internet and at workshops these days is a great thing. Don’t get me wrong. But there does come a point where you need to STOP doing that – and START working with a coach and with a plan. WHY?

Because without that – you’re going to make costly mistakes! That’s why. How do I know? Because I did it, too! Just like the hair products. I went from product, to product, to product, to product – never learning how to actually apply the stuff to get the end result that I wanted so badly.

With all the free information you’re gathering, you’re going to fall into the trap of running here and there so that:

  • You get a website done
  • You get business cards created
  • You may even run out and rent office space!
  • You decide you need to write a book.
  • No, wait – you need to create on-line products.
  • No – I know – you need to travel to more workshops.

Good grief! Stop the insanity! Stop the spending! Catch your breath – listen, when you start out in business, you seriously do not know what you do not know. You are in business to make sales and to make a profit – there, I’ve said it!

Every successful entrepreneur has a coach and has a plan. Simple! Stop running around, spending your savings on this, that and everything else. Just like the hair products, yes there are certain ‘tools’ that you need – but you will spend more strategically and get better support when you look to the experts. People who have walked your path – and who have succeeded (translation: who are making money and making a profit!)

So, stop the insanity. Stop the crazy spending. Start making smart decisions that will take you and your business where you want to go and grow – and hey, that may even lead to your own make-over at Nordstrom’s! Try it – you’ll like it!

What’s the first thing you are going to STOP doing and START doing in your business right now? Please share your thoughts!
